Do you know what's Poha?
Poha is flattened rice also known as aval in Tamil, avalakki in Kannada, Chivda in North India, chuda in Oria. Along with different names, Indian states like Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and South India have their traditional recipes of preparing and serving Poha.
Poha has several health benefits that make it good for diabetic and cardiac patients. It's a wholesome gluten-free meal and mostly recommended by nutritionists in India for breakfast.
Being a food blogger I can't keep Poha specific to the traditional recipes. So, I thought of creating something sumptuous with this healthy food grain.
Veg Poha Cutlet without using Onion and Garlic is my new addition to the list of Poha Recipes. It's a no onion, garlic vegetarian snack recipe with Poha. This particular veg cutlet recipe is without bread so even if you don't have bread or breadcrumbs at home -No worries! You can make the cutlets easily.
These quick, tasty crunchy bites with Poha are perfect for evening finger snacks while partying or traveling. It can be prepared in two ways -pan-fried or deep-fried. Both ways, this beaten rice patty tastes delicious even if packed hours before.

So, if you're looking for a healthy evening snack then these veg cutlets are a must-try. You can make them with minimal ingredients. Let's find out what are they.
Overview:
Preparation time: 15 min. Cooking time: 10 mins. Course: Snacks Serve: 4
Ingredients:
Major
- Boiled Mashed Potato- 4
- Soaked Poha- 1 cup
- Capsicum- 1
- Cabbage- 1cup
- Oil-for frying
Spices
- Salt- 1 tablespoon (to taste)
- Red chili powder- 1/2 tablespoon
- Turmeric powder- 1 teaspoon
- Amchur powder- 1 teaspoon
Cooking Method
Step-1
Firstly mince the cabbage and capsicum. For the mincing of veggies, I personally love to use a manual chopper.
The reason why I prefer a manual chopper
- Easy and handy to use.
- Triple blade system- helps in sharp mincing and avoids grinding.
- A transparent base in light colors helps in keeping an eye on the stage at which the chopping is happening.
- Easy to wash because of detachable blades.
- Easy mincing by just pulling a simple cord.
- Need not wait for electricity power while working with it
Step-2
In a big mixing bowl, add the mashed boiled potatoes, veggies, and soaked Poha. Soaked Poha is an important ingredient as by adding it, the cutlets become crispy. It also helps in binding the cutlet without any use of breadcrumb.
Step- 3
In the mixture add all the spices mentioned.
Step-4
Mix and combine well to form a dough consistency.
Step-5
Take a portion of the mixture and shape it into the desired shape like heart, square, round, oval.
Step-6
Method 1: Heat the oil in a deep kadhai. when oil becomes hot drop the cutlets in hot oil and then fry at medium temperature.
Method 2: Heat 2 tablespoon oil in a non-stick pan. Place and shallow fry the cutlets on low heat till they turn golden brown from both sides.
Tip 1: Oil should be full hot before you drop the cutlets.
Tip 2: To check the oil- drop a tiny ball of a mix in the oil, if it starts floating and doesn't break then assume the oil is ready else wait for a few minutes.
Tip 3: Drop the cutlets only in hot oil and on a high flame.
Tip 4: Once cutlets form a structure then reduce the flame to medium flame and fry.
Tip 5: Don't overload the oil with cutlets. Place only 4-5 pieces at one time.
Final Serve
Serve hot and crispy Poha cutlet with green chutney or tomato ketchup.
